Chapter 11

The universe is smiling down upon us. The road is clear and there’s a parking space right in front of the station. Easing in, I make an announcement. “Last stop.”

“Are you sure they can protect me?”

Turning in my seat in order to peer over my right shoulder, I whip off my designer shades and frown. “Have you got a better idea, fugitive?”

He shrugs his narrow shoulders.

“Then come with me if you want to live.” I’ll admit, my Arnold Schwarzenegger impersonation is weak, but it gets a small grin from my nervous passenger.

He steps out of the vehicle, and I join him on the sidewalk.

The deputy I’ve nicknamed Furious Monkeys occupies her standard spot at the front desk, and the look of concentration on her face indicates she’s deep into the world of virtual primates.

“Hey, Deputy Baird. What level are you now?”

She doesn’t pull her eyes away from the screen, but a smile flickers across her face. “Hit 268 this morning. Last month I thought I had the game beat—250 was the highest—then they released thirty new levels.”

“Good for you. Did Erick mention I was bringing in a witness?”

“Right. The protective custody thing?”

“10-4.”

She jerks her thumb toward the bullpen. “You’ll want to talk to Paulsen.”

If she thinks for one minute that I have ever in my life wanted to talk to Deputy Paulsen, she is sadly mistaken. “Thanks.”

Turning to my charge, I motion for him to follow as I push through the crooked swinging gate and walk, with a confidence I don’t possess, toward the portly, trigger-happy deputy’s desk.

“What’s this one guilty of?”

“At this point, he doesn’t appear to be guilty of anything. He has valuable information in the Whitecloud murder case, and someone broke into his place to try to frighten him into keeping quiet.”

She hoists herself to her feet, adjusts the duty belt cinched around her doughy middle, and, as always, places her right hand on her gun. “Is that so?”

The kid nods.

“I’ll take it from here, Moon. You can go ahead and leave the real police work to the professionals.”

Her condescending remarks used to get under my skin, but now every time she lashes out at me, I remind myself that she’s lost two elections to my boyfriend, and my grandmother personally made the largest donation on record to his last campaign. I may stifle my comeback, but I can’t keep the smug grin from my face. “Best of luck to you then.”

She scoffs, spits in her trash can, and grips the witness by the arm, as though he were a suspect.

“Is Erick—”

She rudely interrupts. “Sheriff Harper is out of the station.”

I tip my floppy brim in her direction and exit before I say something I’ll enjoy, but Erick will regret.

On the brief drive back to my bookshop, I reach out to Sheriff Too-Hot-To-Handle. “Hey, can you check on something for me?”

He agrees to do me a favor if it can be handled over the phone.

“I need to find out, for certain, if the Hawk Island Floating Casino was equipped with lifeboats.
